Making quizzes

Quizzing your students is a great way to engage your students, help them retain knowledge, and give them the satisfaction of a job well done.

Making quiz questions#

To add quiz questions to a map, load the map, then click Overview.

info

If you've published this course publicly, the button will read Course instead.

Now click +, then Add quiz to create a new quiz.

Once you've made a quiz, you can edit it any time by clicking Course, then set the Edit toggle to on and click the quiz button.

Quiz settings#

By default, students can retry quizzes and resubmit answers.

You can click the cog icon to change this in the settings:

Question types#

There are six quiz question types you can choose between.

They are:

  • Short text
  • Long text
  • Number
  • Multi-choice
  • Multi-field
  • Recall

Short Text#

Students have to type in an answer to short text questions.

This is marked against the one or more correct answers you set for the question.

If their answer matches, the student sees a tick and moves to the next question. Otherwise, they see the correct answer.

Any valid answer you set to a short text question (see Question types) will be automatically counted as a possible correct answer.

You can set multiple valid answers for situations where there is more than one way to answer a question (i.e. 'x + y' or 'y + x').

info

The student's answer must match exactly to be marked as correct, though the system is not case-sensitive and ignores extra spaces.

Long text#

Long text questions are not automatically marked (though you can choose to read them yourself for marking purposes if you wish!).

A long answer question counts as 'answered' in the question reporting after the student enters any text in the question window and clicks 'next'.

Number#

This is essentially short text, but only numeric characters are accepted.

Multiple Choice#

Students choose between several possible answers, one of which you have chosen as the correct one.

To make a multiple choice question, set the question type to Multi choice. Then click Add answer and submit an answer. Once you have at least two answers to choose between, click the checkbox next to the correct answer, then the save icon in the top right of the question pane.

Multiple Fields#

Multiple field questions have one or more input fields for students to submit answers.

info

Students have to get all these fields correct to get the question right.

To add a quiz field, click this icon on the quiz editor:

Recall#

Quiz recall is a way of using the Test yourself tool in a quiz.

Click the box reading ‘0 nodes’ to select the nodes on the map you want the students to practice remembering:

By default, students are allowed to ‘reset’ their first attempt and try again, but you can disable this if you want.

Correct answers#

When you set a correct answer for a question, the system will automatically mark students' answers for you.

Multiple choice#

For multiple choice questions, the Valid answer button is used to add possible answers to the question. Only the checkbox you have selected as correct will be marked right if the student selects it.

Long text#

Long text questions cannot be automatically marked, but you can view your students' answers in the Teacher Reports.

Suffixes#

You can add a suffix to a question so it shows up as part of the textbox where students submit their answers.

E.g. a 'degrees' symbol has been added as a suffix:

The purpose of this is so that the system will not mark students as wrong if you have symbolic notation in your correct answers but the students omit it.
